Lewin, James M. 1836 born Swansea MA; apprenticeship at Gorham, at close of which he learned from Mrs. Chapin to paint photographs & was engaged by Manchester Chapin, largest photographic studio in Providence 1864 removed to Boston; 1877 died Lewis, Edmund L. 1883, 31 Oct. born Providence RI, son of Edmund L., of Welsh origin, who was brought up in Kingston, Jamaica; who left home as teenager to join Confederate Navy but didn't like it so deserted & joined Union Navy (two comrades who remained were killed at Vicksburg). Came to Providence; lived on Elbow Street; met & on 10 October 1873 married Mary E. Lynott, whose sister was wife of chaser James Albert Major 1899, 3 Dec. hired as clerk; 13 Dec. apprenticed as chaser, $3 1900, 4 Sept. transferred to L desk #45, $0.05/hr; assigned desk #33 when George Shakel went to England; 1905, 6 Mar., $0.30/hr; 1906, 30 July, $0.33/hr; 1908, 12 Aug. left Edmund Jr. took classes at RISD; decided he didn't want to be chaser. Went to Attleboro, then Filene's, Boston; spent life in retail, which he loved ('he could sell ice to Eskimos'). From Filene's went to Baltimore (where Elizabeth was born), then Brooklyn, ending as assistant manager of G. Fox in Hartford.
